Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral skin infection caused by the poxvirus called “Molluscum contagiosm”. It forms nodules or bumps like structures on the skin. It is a harmless condition and mostly affects children below the age of 15 years. The virus is spread from person to person either directly or via contaminated objects like a towel or piece of cloth. Treatment is not necessary in most of the cases, but it doesn't go away easily if one has a weakened immune system.

What causes Molluscum Contagiosum?

One can get molluscum contagiosum when a person comes in contact with the person who is infected. Teens and adults are more likely to get the disease intervention.

It also spreads from one part of the body to another. If one has molluscum contagiosum virus, it might spread from one part of the body to another by touching or scratching it.

What are complications caused by Molluscum contagiosum Virus (MCV)?

Molluscum Contagiosum rarely causes some complications as follows:

Scarring- Sometimes small patches or scars are left behind after the healing process.

Eye problems- Eye infections like conjunctivitis may ensue, which makes the eyes sensitive to light.

Bacterial Infection- The bacterial infections are caused by scratching the bumps.

Disseminated Secondary eczema (dermatitis that develops due to infections).

Treatment to remove Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum Contagiosum is not a serious disease, it may remain in a person for some time (two months to four years) and later disappears. Clinical intervention is not always necessary, as the condition is self- limiting. If a person has large lesions on the face, neck or it has spread over a large area then it advised to go for the treatment. The various treatment options include:

Curettage- In this method, the bumps are removed by scraping it with a thin, sharp-edged, spoon-like metal instrument. The procedure is conducted under local anesthesia.

Cryotherapy- The therapy involves freezing the spots with liquid nitrogen to remove them. Each bump is frozen up to 10 to 15 seconds or until an icy layer forms over the spot and surrounding skin. Several sessions are needed to completely get rid of the lesions.

Diathermy- In this procedure, a heated electrical device is used to burn off the Mollusca. The treatment is done under local anesthesia.

Laser Therapy- Laser therapy is the latest method of treating molluscum contagiosum virus. A powerful beam of light is exposed to the cells that make up Mollusca spots and those cells are destroyed.

Chemical treatment- Doctors dip a sharp metal instrument into a chemical solution (podophyllin or phenol) and then pricks each Mollusca spots. Chemical treatment may cause scarring and it may cause some discomfort.
